Mike Peterson is a retired U.S. Navy Commander, a devoted husband, and proud father of three girls – two that attend Douglas County Public Schools. He moved to Colorado in 2004 while serving in the military and remained here with his family after retiring from the Navy in 2011.
He has over 30 years of professional experience developing and leading teams, serving others, and is a passionate advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Mike is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School, where he earned a M.A. in Security Studies. He finished first in his TOPGUN class before becoming an F-14 Tomcat weapons and tactics school instructor. He fought in several wars including operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In 2004, he was recognized as the “finest attack aviator in the Pacific Fleet.” In addition to flying duties, he was the Executive Officer of a multi-national overseas naval base overseeing the Navy’s largest base operational support contract.
In 2020, he co-founded SPARTAN Training & Performance with other like-minded veterans to assist high-reliability organizations in optimizing their safety, performance, leadership, and organizational culture.
As the father of a daughter who has a rare genetic disorder, Mike has been a strong advocate for Coloradans of all ages with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He and his wife have committed decades to improving the quality of life of those affected by genetic disorders and individuals with special needs. Mike’s emphasis on educational excellence and individual achievement for all students whether gifted, mainstream, or involved in special education can help transform the lives of students who need specialized individualized education services.
Mike and his wife, who works in the school district as an assistant for Affective Needs students, have been married for 27 years. He is running for the School Board in District B. Mike’s servant leadership style will refocus the school district on core elements of academic achievement and growth in reading, writing, math, and science. He will help increase parent choice and empower local teachers and principals.
